A Bit About Bugatti

Today Bugatti is celebrating 40,000 days in existence. The company was started back in 1909 by an Italian immigrant named Ettore Bugatti.

The factory in Mosheim, France, where the Chiron supercar is built and the Divo prototype is being prepared for launch is isn’t referred to as a “factory” but rather an atelier, speaking more of the craftsmanship-like nature of the facility.

As Stephan Winkelmann, president of Bugatti, put it, “Company founder Ettore Bugatti said that a technical product is only perfect if it is also aesthetically perfect. This also includes the craftsmanship.”

An example: it takes three weeks to paint a body. (There are as many as six basecoat layers and up to eight topcoats.)

Other reason why this isn’t a “factory”:

1. It is located next door to a château.
2. Its footprint isn’t a series of rectangles but is, rather, a >1,000 square meter oval. Why an oval? Because of the Bugatti badge.
