Only about 6% of the 8 million vehicles recalled in the U.S. over the past two years to replace faulty Takata Corp. airbag inflators have actually been repaired, according to Bloomberg News.

The regional campaigns involve 10 carmakers. Bloomberg bases its estimate on an analysis of progress reports submitted to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Earlier this week the agency told carmakers to expand their callbacks nationwide after a Takata inflator in a car outside the recall zone exploded. Observers have estimated that doing so could easily triple the size of the Takata recall to more than 20 million vehicles.

The faulty inflators have been blamed for four deaths in the U.S. and one in Malaysia, all involving Honda cars.
