Daimler AG’s Mercedes-Benz unit is equipping its new “Factory 56” manufacturing plant in Sindelfingen, Germany, with a 5G communications network.

Mercedes says the application will be the first 5G installation in an automotive production facility. The network, which will cover more than 215,300 sq ft, is being installed by Telefonica Deutschland and Swedish telecommunications giant LM Ericsson.

The use of high-speed 5G technology will enable real-time data sharing throughout the production process to improve efficiency and quickly identify potential problem areas, according to the carmaker. Mercedes says the data transmission rates will be in the gigabit range, with low latency and a high level of reliability.

Information can be shared and protected as necessary via the local network.

To ensure optimal performance, the network will use several small-cell indoor antennas and a central 5G hub. After testing the technology at Sindelfingen, Mercedes plans to gradually expand 5G systems at other global manufacturing operations.

Factory 56 is due to launch production of the next-generation S-Class sedan and upcoming EQ-badged electric vehicles next year. The facility also is expected to produce future robo-taxis for Mercedes.
