General Motors Co. may use a V-8 engine that displaces “well over” 8.0 liters for an upcoming Class 7 heavy-duty truck the carmaker is said to be developing with Navistar International Corp., sources tell GM Authority.
Such a powerplant would surpass the 6.6-liter V-8 due to launch in the 2020 Chevrolet Silverado/GMC Sierra HD medium-duty pickup trucks as GM’s largest gasoline-fueled engine.
Based on GM’s fifth-generation small-block architecture, that engine makes 401 hp and 464 lb-ft of torque. The Silverado/Sierra HD models also offer an optional 6.6-liter Duramax diesel that kicks out 445 hp and 910 lb-ft of torque.
Navistar co-developed the medium-duty trucks and produces them for GM. The truckmaker also assemblies GM’s Chevrolet Express and GMC Savana commercial vans.
Last November, GM Authority reported the partners were in the initial talks about collaborating on a Class 7 truck.
