VW Touts More Efficient 6-Speed Manual Gearbox

Volkswagen AG says its new 6-speed manual transmission can reduce carbon dioxide emissions by as much as five grams per km, depending on which engine it is used with.

The next-generation gearbox, known internally as the MQ281, will be used in a wide range of Audi, SEAT, Skoda and VW vehicles with torque capacities as great as 250 lb-ft. First up is the 2020 model VW Passat midsize car, which will offer the new 6-speed manual at launch later this year.

VW says it used simulation tools during the development process to reduce the transmission’s weight, minimize friction and improve oil flow. The design also provides better launch performance and enables the vehicle to be operated at lower engine speeds.

Production of the MQ281 has started at VW Group facilities in Argentina and Spain. The company says it can build as many as 450,000 of the transmissions per year.
