Driving a Mercedes Couch?

Auto interior designers, nearly to a person, say that when they’re looking for inspiration and trends and developments, they check out the Milan Furniture Fair. Let’s face it: Done right, an automotive interior is akin to an environment with fine fashion-forward objects on which to sit and places upon which to put things.

The designers at Mercedes-Benz are doing the other one better, it seems, because at this year’s Salone Internazionale del Mobile, which wraps up on Sunday, they’re exhibiting a new line of furniture, developed with an Italian furniture manufacturer, the Formitalia Luxury Group.

Mercedes-Benz Style Möbelkollektion

The collection is labeled the Mercedes-Benz Style collection.

Said Gorden Wagener, head of Design at Mercedes, “Formitalia and Mercedes-Benz stand for top quality and exquisite workmanship which embodies luxury and passion.”

He went on to say, “The various pieces of furniture”—including a sofa, chaise longue, dining room table, chairs, sideboard, shelf, chest, and bed—“reflect the progressive, dynamic design idiom of our current show cars and concept vehicles, offering an exclusive, emotional experience outside our vehicles as well.”

This isn’t the first time Mercedes-Benz designers have developed interiors for something other than cars and trucks. Last year the EC145 Mercedes-Benz Style helicopter from Eurocopter was unveiled. That interior is described as offering “the deluxe materials, elegant woods, and ambient lighting familiar from the S and E-Class.”

Reportedly, a Eurocopter EC145 will set you back something in excess of $5-million. We’re guessing that the furniture, which goes on sale worldwide in October 2012, will be a bit less dear.
