Jaguar is bringing to market two new powertrains to its lineup, a supercharged 3.0-liter V6 and a turbocharged 2.0-liter I4. Said Ron Lee, chief engineer-Powertrain for Jaguar Cars, “Both these new engines make intelligent use of forced-induction technology to produce high-specific output in an efficient way, while delivering the compelling combination of flexibility, refinement, and driver reward that are integral attributes in all Jaguar engines.”
The new V6 is a derivation of the existing Jaguar all-aluminum V8. The V8 is available in a naturally aspirated version that produces 385 hp and supercharged versions that produce either 510 or 550 hp, depending on application. The new quad-cam V6 similarly has two power ratings that are application-specific, 340 hp @ 6,500 rpm and 380 hp @ 6,500 rpm.
The engine has a lightweight die-cast block. There are cross-bolted main bearing caps. There is a dual independent variable cam timing system that is activated by the positive and negative torques generated by the movement of the intake and exhaust valves; it features actuation rates of more than 150 degrees per second through the rev range. There is a spray-guided direct-injection system that sprays fuel directly into the combustion chambers at up to 300 bar. The compression ratio in the supercharged v8 is 9.5:1; it is boosted to 10.5:1 in the supercharged V6, improving fuel economy and reducing emissions. Like the V8, the engine has a system of counter-rotating front and rear balancer weights to enhance smoothness and refinement of the engine performance.
A Roots-type twin vortex supercharger is mounted in the V of the engine. A water-cooled intercooler is used to reduce the temperature of the intake air to improve power and efficiency. A new Bosch engine management software package is used to control the supercharger.
There is a start-stop system applied to the engine that uses a twin-solenoid starter; it is said to be able to restart the engine in less time than it takes for the driver’s foot to move from the brake to the accelerator. Should the driver get off the accelerator and on the brake and then have a change of mind, the system quickly restarts the engine by reintroducing fuel into the cylinders.
The engine will be mated to a ZF eight-speed automatic transmission.
The turbocharged I4 is all-aluminum, as well. With a mass of just 304 lb., it is the lightest production Jaguar engine ever produced. The engine will be oriented longitudinally and mated to the same ZF eight-speed as the V8s.
The engine has a low-inertia turbo-charger that is fed via a lightweight thin-walled exhaust manifold. Chain-driven cams operate with variable timing on the intake and exhaust valves. The piston rings and tappets are coated to reduce friction. There are twin balancer shafts, active engine mounts, and an acoustic engine cover.
The engine has a peak power of 240 hp @ 5,500 rpm.
