Mazda Hints at the Future

At the risk of turning this into some sort of Mazda tribute site (pun not intended), yesterday the company announced that at the forthcoming Tokyo Motor Show (October 28-November 5), in addition to showing a “next-generation product concept”

which is quite clearly a hatchback as indicated by that teaser picture, and even more clearly from this photo which is highly likely to be the SKTACTIV-Vehicle Architecture that probably underpins that hatch

it will also be showing what it is describing as its “next-generation design vision,” which is, in effect, upping the ante on the KODO design language that was manifest in a production vehicle in the form of the Mazda CX-5 in 2012:

To be sure, vehicle manufacturers often show speed forms that look completely appealing and just as impossible at things like motor shows.

But as was the case with the roll out of the KODO design language, first in the form of a concept vehicle, the Shinari, then in manufactured cars and crossovers, it is no leap of imagination to come to the conclusion that Mazda may very well start producing vehicles that will have some of those hinted-at forms sooner rather than later.

Incidentally, the “next-generation product concept” will have a SKYACTIV-X engine under its hood.
