McLaren and the Fine Print

Last week at the Goodwood Festival of Speed That Many of Us Would Like to Have But Only a Few Can Attain, McLaren Automotive physically introduced the McLaren GT (it had digitally introduced the car on line in May). The company describes the car as the “McLaren of Grand Tourers.”

The two-seater has a 611-hp, 4.0-liter, twin-turbo V8 that permits the car to accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in 3.2 seconds and has a top speed of 203 mph. Which is probably why the word “McLaren” is used to modify “Grand Tourers,” because presumably grand touring is done in a more stately, less brisk manner.

Be that as it may, the vehicle is able to accommodate 20-cubic-feet of luggage, which is quite notable. By way of comparison, the Corvette ZR 1 can handle just 15-cubic-feet and even the Impala just 18.8-cubic-feet.

What is an important number is that of the quantity of British pounds that the McLaren GT starts at: £163,000. Which is about $204,000 U.S.

Here’s something that is rather remarkable given that price. Trim options include Nappa leather, soft grain leather and Alcantara. There is an optional electrochromic glazed panel to provide enhanced cabin ambience. A 12-speaker Bowers & Wilkins audio system is also optionally available.

Seems like there are a lot of optional equipment for something that has such a stratospheric starting price.
