An unidentified buyer paid $19.8 million for a 1994 McLaren F1 supercar at a RM Sotheby auction during last weekend’s Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance in California.

The price is the most ever for a McLaren but fell short of projections that estimated the car could go for as high as $23 million. The previous record for a McLaren was set in 2017 by a 1995 F1 that gaveled for $15.6 million.

The 1994 model (pictured) was modified to meet LM racing specifications but never competed on the track. The LM package includes a BMW-sourced, 680-hp 6.1-liter V-12 engine and enhanced aerodynamics, thanks to a massive rear wing and revised front fascia vents.

Other goodies include a gold-plated engine bay, upgraded air conditioner and audio unit, modified exhaust system and a race-spec suspension. The car has logged fewer than 13,400 miles.

The overall record at a public auction was set last year for a 1962 Ferrari 250 GTO race car that fetched $48.4 million. Several vehicles have netted higher prices during private sales, includes a record $69 million paid for a 1963 Ferrari 250 GTO last summer.
