John Maddox, who launched the Michigan’s based American Center for Mobility two years ago, has been replaced as president and CEO on an interim basis by Kirk Steudle, head of the state’s Dept. of Transportation.

The center’s board did not explain why Maddox departed but expressed appreciation for his efforts to launch the 330-acre test facility for connected and self-driving vehicles.

The board emphasizes that Steudle is not being considered as a permanent successor and will continue to head MDOT. He has been heavily involved in the center and numerous advanced mobility initiatives in the state.

As head of MDOT since 2006, he has chaired the federal Transportation Research Board and is a past president of the American Assn. of State Highway and Transportation Officials.
