BMW Reveals One-Off Pickup Truck

BMW AG unveiled a one-of-a-kind pickup truck last weekend but says there are no plans to produce it.

Based on BMW’s X7 large crossover vehicle, the X7 Pickup is 10 cm (3.9 inches) longer to accommodate a 140-cm-long (55-inch) cargo bed. The bed is lined in teak wood and trimmed in aluminum and carbon fiber. 

BMW says the vehicle was created by a team of 12 company trainees in 10 months. Although the company insists there are no plans to produce the truck, it is fully road legal.

The front half of the crew-cab truck is virtually identical to the three-row X7 crossover. But where the SUV’s C-pillar would be are a pair of aluminum grab handles and a sheet of upright glass that closes off the passenger compartment from the load bed.

The pickup is 200 kg (441 lbs) lighter than a conventional X7, thanks to a carbon-reinforced roof, tailgate and rear doors.

The X7 Pickup is powered by the same 3.0-liter, turbocharged inline 6-cylinder engine and 8-speed automatic transmission that powers the standard X7. The truck also borrows the X7’s all-wheel drive and air suspension.
