BMW AG says it will replace driver-side airbag inflators in 140,000 of its 2004-2006 model 3 Series sedans, coupes, convertibles and wagons located anywhere in the U.S.
The campaign targets potentially faulty inflators supplied by Takata Corp. The recall broadens a callback originally restricted to 3 Series cars located in high-humidity parts of the country.
Last month a report of a single driver-side airbag explosion in a Ford Mustang prompted the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration to order BMW and four other carmakers to widen their recalls nationwide. The company notes that none of the reported airbag misfires to date involves a BMW vehicle.
