Automatic braking systems usually require a combination of video and radar sensors. But Robert Bosch GmbH says its new stereo color camera makes radar unnecessary, thus lowering the cost and complexity of such systems.

Bosch's device tracks a 50 horizontal field of vision and can take 3-D measurements at a distance of at least 50 meters (165 feet). The two camera lenses are only 12 cm (5 inches) apart, making the system the most compact available for automotive applications, according to the company.

The imaging sensors use CMOS technology and boast a resolution of 1,280 x 960 pixels. Bosch says the system can handle other measuring tasks, such as identifying street signs and pedestrians. Because the system controller is built into the camera enclosure, the entire device can be integrated into the rearview mirror housing.

The Bosch system debuted earlier this year as a standard feature in the 2015 model Land Rover Discovery Sport SUV.
