Eaton Corp. is developing a compact inverter for electrified vehicles that will be tested by an unnamed carmaker in the next two months.
The new inverter has a power density of 35 kw/L and boasts a 98% operating efficiency. The design will help boost driving range and improve packaging flexibility, according to the supplier.
Inverters draw electricity from the battery and control how it is applied to an electrified vehicle’s motor to manage power and torque. Eaton says the new system can be used in all types of hybrid and full-electric vehicles.
Eaton expects electrified vehicles will account for 38% of the global passenger vehicle market by 2030. The company created a new eMobility unit last summer.
