Starting next year, Ford Motor Co. will offer mild-hybrid versions of its Fiesta and Focus small cars in Europe.

The new variants are part of Ford’s previously announced plans to electrify all its European models in coming years. The initiative includes mild-hybrid versions of Ford’s Transit, Transit Custom and Tourneo Custom (pictured) light commercial vehicles, and a traditional hybrid version of the Mondeo.
 

The 48-volt architecture for the Fiesta and Focus will use a belt-driven integrated starter-generator in place of a standard alternator. In addition to engine stop-start capability and regenerative braking, the electrified system can reduce turbo lag and provide a temporary torque boost, according to the carmaker.

The mild-hybrid system is teamed with Ford’s turbocharged 1.0-liter 3-cylinder Ecoboost engine. Ford estimates the combination will help the Focus Ecoboost achieve 60 mpg on the WLTP test cycle, while tailpipe emissions are limited to 106 g/km. The Fiesta Hybrid isn’t far behind, with projected ratings of 57 mpg and112 g/km.

Ford plans to announce additional hybrid models in April.
