Ford Motor Co. is developing all-electric variants of its F-150 and Super Duty pickup trucks, and Transit commercial van.
The carmaker also affirmed it intends to offer a hybrid-electric version of the F-Series. No timetable was given for introducing the new electrified models.
The plan will help “future-proof” Ford’s top-selling F-Series and other commercial vehicles, president Jim Farley told analysts at an event in Detroit on Wednesday. Several other companies also are developing fullsize electric pickups, including Tesla and Rivian Automotive.
Such vehicles could provide instantaneous torque and more power for auxiliary equipment for work applications.
Ford previously has said it will invest $11 billion on electrified vehicles in coming years. The plan includes launching 16 full EVs and 24 hybrids worldwide.
Earlier this week Ford announced plans to add a hybrid variant of its new Explorer SUV. The carmaker also is developing a Mustang-derived electric crossover vehicle.
