Chris Liddell, former chief financial officer at General Motors and Microsoft, has been named the Trump administration’s deputy chief of staff for policy coordination.

Liddell, 59, will oversee the integration of the administration’s policies across government agencies and departments. He worked on the Trump transition team and has been a part of the administrations effort to overhaul federal information technology systems.

Liddell had been a candidate to become President Donald Trump’s top economic adviser after Gary Cohn resigned earlier this month. That job went to CNBC TV commentator Larry Kudlow, a former chief economist at Bear Stearns and associate director for economics and planning during President Ronald Regan’s first term.

A New Zealander by birth, Liddell began his career as an investment banker in New Zealand. He was chief financial officer at Microsoft between 2005 and 2009. He joined GM as CFO a year later and led the carmaker’s post-bankruptcy initial public offering. He served as transition planning chief for the Mitt Romney presidential campaign before joining the Trump administration.
