Hyundai Motor Co. is partnering with Amazon.com to allow owners of its new Genesis-branded luxury models to remotely access certain vehicle functions.
This will be the first automotive application for Amazon’s voice-activated Echo, Echo Dot and Tap speakers, which provides web-enabled features similar to a smartphone. Users also can interact with “Alexa,” the Amazon equivalent to the iPhone’s Siri system, to control electronic devices in so-called “smart” homes.
The tie-in with Genesis will allow motorists to use Amazon devices from their home to remotely lock and unlock the vehicle, start the engine, set the temperature and honk the horn. There will be no additional cost for the automotive service, and Genesis says it will give car buyers Amazon gift cards to purchase an Alexa-enabled device.
The service will be available on G80 and G90 sedans equipped with Genesis Connected Services capability, which is complementary during the first three years of vehicle ownership. Future enhancements may allow users to manage home systems from their cars.
