General Motors Co. is partnering with ExxonMobil to expand its in-vehicle Marketplace app to allow owners of Buick vehicles to pay for fuel at Exxon and Mobil stations throughout the U.S.

GM's launched a pilot program of the service in April. That scheme allows owners of Chevrolet cars and trucks to make in-vehicle payments without swiping a credit card or using a smartphone at Shell stations in Detroit, Seattle and Houston.

The fuel payment feature is part of Marketplace e-commerce app GM launched in December. The system allows motorists to use their infotainment touchscreen and voice-activation system to pre-order coffee and food, make restaurant reservations, locate and pay for fuel, reserve and pay for parking, search for nearby hotels and shop online.

The carmaker downloaded the app into nearly 2 million new Buick, Cadillac, Chevy and GMC vehicles last year and plans to double that total by the end of 2018. By then, the service is expected to be available at more than 22,000 Shell and ExxonMobil stations throughout the U.S.

To use the feature, drivers press the appropriate brand icon in the Marketplace app and select an Exxon, Mobil or Shell station location and pump number. For Shell customers, a code is generated that lets the user activate a desired pump and start fueling. ExxonMobil doesn’t require a code. Payments are automatically charged through the stations' rewards programs.
