GM Gears Up New Defense Unit

General Motors Co. expects to have its new GM Defense unit, which was incorporated last October, to fully operational later this year. Automotive News reports.

The unit is expected to be headed by Charles Freese, executive director of GM’s global fuel cell activities since 2008, according to AN. The newspaper says GM Defense initially will focus on GM’s fuel cell technologies, including the Silent Utility Rover Universal Superstructure that GM unveiled publicly last autumn. SURUS (pictured) literally is a mobile platform that can carry a wide range of body types.

GM also has developed the fuel cell-powered ZH2, a highly modified version of its Chevrolet Colorado midsize pickup truck, for the U.S. Army.
