General Motors Co. is temporarily suspending production at SUV/crossover plants in Canada and Mexico to balance inventories of unsold vehicles, Automotive News reports.

GM will drop one of three shifts at its factory in San Luis Potosi, Mexico, in mid-August and halt operations for a week in late September at its plant in Ingersoll, Ont., at the end of September. Both facilities make the Chevrolet Equinox crossover (pictured). San Luis Potosi also builds the Chevy Trax and GMC Terrain crossover.

GM says the reductions reflect variations in industry forecasts of unspecified export markets.

Output at the Canadian and Mexican plants fell 1% and 12%, respectively through the first half of 2019, according to AN data. During that period, demand for the Chevy Equinox rose 11% in the U.S. but plunged 17% in Canada.
