Hella KGaA Hueck & Co. says its fourth-generation 24-GHz radar sensor is less expensive, 25% smaller and offers more measuring capacity than the outgoing device.

Hella plans to launch the new sensor in mid-2017. The unit can be used for blind-spot monitoring, lane-change assistance, rear pre-crash alert and rear cross-traffic alert systems. It will replace a third-generation design that has been in production since June 2014.

The new system will help expand the use of 24-GHz sensors to high-volume cars, according to the German supplier. The company also is developing new 77-GHz device, which will provide much better distance resolution and five times the bandwidth of the 24-GHz design.
