Honda Motor Co. has launched production of the redesigned Honda Fit small car at its new production complex in Celaya, Mexico.

The $800 million facility has capacity to make 200,000 cars and engines per year. Honda will add a small crossover vehicle to the factory's lineup later this year.

The Celaya complex is scheduled to open a $470 million transmission plant in 2015, according to the company.

Honda unveiled the 2015 Fit at the Detroit auto show last month. The car will go on sale in the U.S. this spring. The company has been importing the Fit from Japan until now. It sold 52,900 of the cars in the American market last year, according to Autodata Corp.
