The Steel Market Development Institute (SMDI) awarded its “Automotive Excellence Award” to Honda Motor Co. for the use of advanced high-strength steel in the 2018 Odyssey minivan.

The Odyssey’s structure is comprised of 58% high-strength steel to help reduce weight and enhance rigidity. The design features tailor-welded hot stamped door rings and a new multi-connection bumper beam, which Honda says improves occupant protection.

The award was presented at this week’s Great Designs in Steel seminar in Livonia, Mich. Winners are chosen from presenters at the previous year's seminar. Candidates are rated on cost, mass reduction and performance benefits, innovation and production implementation. SMDI is a business unit of the American Iron and Steel Institute.
