Honda Motor Co. tells Reuters it plans to recall about 135,000 vehicles in Japan to replace potentially faulty airbag inflators supplied by Takata Corp.

The company has called back about 6 million vehicles in the U.S. after four Honda drivers were killed by exploding Takata inflators there. The carmaker said its widening American campaigns would add another 3 million vehicles.

Reuters' source says the new recalls in Japan will involve the same models covered by the expanded U.S. recalls.

Carmakers have recalled more than 16 million vehicles worldwide, including about 2.8 million in Japan, to replace defective Takata airbag components since 2008.
