Toyota Motor Corp.’s Lexus unit is in the early stages of developing in-wheel electric motor systems, company officials tell Digital Trends.

But the carmaker doesn’t expect to introduce the technology, which can provide packaging and performance benefits, for several years. The in-wheel motors will be part of the dedicated platform Lexus is planning for future electrified vehicles.

Toyota previously has said it plans to offer electrified variants of every Toyota and Lexus model by 2025. Noting that such models won’t need as much cooling as piston-powered vehicles, Lexus says it is developing a new grille design that could be unveiled as early as this autumn at the Tokyo auto show.

Protean Electric Inc. currently is the industry leader in in-wheel electric motor systems. The Troy, Mich.-based company was acquired by National Electric Vehicle Sweden AB last month.
