Jaguar Teases Electric XJ

Jaguar Ltd. affirmed plans for an electric version of the next-generation XJ large sedan with a teaser image of the car’s rear end at this week’s Frankfurt auto show.

The vehicle, which is touted as the world’s first full-electric sports sedan, will feature a design different from current Jaguar models. This will include a roomy interior that’s “calm and refreshing,” according to the carmaker.

Jaguar ended production of the current piston-powered XJ in July. The next-generation model could be launched as early as next year.

The XJ will be the first car built on parent Jaguar Land Rover Ltd.’s Modular Longitudinal Architecture (MLA) platform. The chassis is designed to support a wide range of hybrid and full-electric models. The new EV will be produced at JLR’s factory in Castle Bromwich, U.K., which is being retooled for future electrified vehicles.
