Jaguar Land Rover Ltd. is developing a 3D head-up display system that could be used to improve safety and enhance passenger entertainment.

The carmaker is working with researchers at the University of Cambridge’s Centre for Advanced Photonics and Electronics on the program. JLR says the system uses head and eye tracking technology that eliminates the need for 3D movie glasses.

The technology would add a 3D effect to conventional HUDs that would make navigation instructions and alerts for lane departure and potential hazards more noticeable, according to the carmaker.

JLR claims the system also could improve driver reaction time and project augmented reality views of the upcoming road to help drivers in low-visibility conditions.

The company didn’t provide a development or possible commercialization timeline for the technology.
