Fiat Chrysler Automobile NV’s Maserati unit took the wraps off the top-end Trofeo version of its Levante crossover/SUV this week at the New York auto show.

The 2019 model is powered by a 3.8-liter, twin-turbo V-8 that kicks out 590 hp and 538 lb-ft of torque. The engine can propel the Levante Trofeo from zero to 62 mph in 3.9 seconds on its way to a top speed of 187 mph.

The base Levante’s 3.0-liter V-6 makes 345 hp and 369 lb-ft of torque in the Q4 trim package. This is upped to 424 hp and 428 lb-ft in the Levante S Q4.

The Trofeo’s 3.8-liter mill, like all Maserati powerplants, is supplied by Ferrari and has a specific output of 156 hp per liter—the highest of any Maserati engine. Performance is further enhanced with the vehicle’s 50:50 weight distribution.

The Trofeo also is the first Levante to be fitted with Maserati’s Integrated vehicle control system, which the carmaker says improves reaction to various vehicle inputs. Other upgrades include a new shift lever that Maserati says has "improved functionality," a Corsa race mode, 22-inch aluminum wheels and a unique body kit with carbon-fiber components and sports seats.
