Fiat Chrysler Automobiles NV’s Maserati unit plans to launch pre-production of the long-awaited Alfieri sports car at its Modena, Italy, factory in the first half 2020.
The electrified vehicle will be available in three variants: hybrid, plug-in hybrid and full electric. A conventionally powered variant also may be in the works.
Described as being “characteristically Maserati,” the 2+2 coupe is derived from a traditionally powered 2014 concept vehicle. Maserati originally planned to launch a production version of that vehicle in 2016 as a replacement for the Gran Turismo.
The Alfieri will ride on an aluminum spaceframe and be offered in coupe and convertible. Powered by three electric motors and an 800-volt battery, the full EV will be capable of sprinting from zero to 62 mph in two seconds on its way to a top speed of 186 mph.
Upgrades will begin this autumn to prepare the 80-year-old Modena facility for the new model. Moving forward, Maserati says the site will focus on making “special high-performance, high-technology” sports cars.
