British supercar maker McLaren Automotive Ltd. plans to launch 18 new or derivative models over the next seven years—almost all of them hybrid-powered—in a push to hike annual sales from 3,400 in 2017 to 6,000 by 2025.
CEO Mike Flewitt says hybrid powertrains will be necessary to meet future emission standards in major markets worldwide. The iconic British company’s only hybrid model today is the P1 hypercar, which debuted five years ago.
McLaren announced the £1.2 billion ($1.6 billion) product initiative, called Track25, earlier today at the Goodwood Festival of Speed event in southern England. The targets expand on the company’s Track 22 plan to debut 15 new models by 2022, at least half of which were to get hybrid-electric power.
McLaren confirms it is developing a super-fast charging system with solid-state batteries. The technology is intended to allow future models to drive at racetrack speeds for 30 minutes between charges.
