Modified Ford GT Breaks 300-mph Barrier

M2K Motorsports LLC, a Fulshear, Tex.-based tuner company, hit 300.4 mph in a modified 2006 Ford GT supercar at this weekend’s Texas Mile event to set a new record for a street legal car.  

The vehicle broke its own record of 293.6 mph that M2K achieved at the same event in 2017. Both runs were set on a mile-long runway at the regional airport in Victoria, Tex.

M2K, which was founded in 2013, added a second turbocharger to the GT’s stock 5.4-liter V-8. The modified powerplant generates an estimated 2,500 hp, far surpassing the 2,000-hp readout limit of the dynamometer it was tested on.

M2K says the turbochargers generated 45 psi of boost. The engine, which was modified to run on methanol, was mated to the stock GT’s 6-speed manual transmission.

The fastest production car is the Koenigsegg Agera RS supercar, which sprinted to 277.9 mph in 2017. Koenigsegg and several other carmakers, including Bugatti and Hennessey, are targeting 300 mph or more with next-generation models.
