New Ferrari GT Coupe Takes Shape

Ferrari SpA took the wraps off its all-new Roma 2+2 coupe this week in Italy.

The carmaker describes the vehicle as a cross between a sports car and Gran Turismo touring model, geared toward less aggressive drivers than typical Ferrari owners.

The retro-styled design—featuring a long downward-sloping hood and swoopy fenders—was inspired by classic front-engined 1960s-era Ferraris, such as the 250 GT Berlinetta. Other highlights include an eggcrate-type grille, steep greenhouse, quad exhaust pipes and flush-mounted door handles.

Measuring 183 inches long and 78 inches wide, the Roma is slightly smaller than the Portofino convertible. The car’s dry weight is listed at more than 3,200 lbs.

Power comes from a 3.9-liter twin-turbo V-8 engine, which is mated with an 8-speed dual-clutch transmission. Kicking out 612 hp and 561 lb-ft of torque, the engine can propel the car from zero to 62 mph in 3.4 seconds on its way to a top speed of just under 200 mph.

There are five drive modes and a “dynamic enhancer” function that controls yaw angle by hydraulically adjusting brake pressure. Other goodies include an active aerodynamic system and the first application of Ferrari’s latest Side Slip Control technology, which uses active dampers to enhance cornering capabilities.

The interior is split into separate pods for the driver and front passenger. In addition to a 16-inch digital instrument cluster and an 8.6-inch center stack unit, there is a separate touchscreen for the passenger.
