Ford Motor Co.'s next-generation F-150 pickup truck will replace the current 5.0-liter “Coyote” V-8 engine option with a 4.8-liter unit that is more powerful and more efficient, Ford Authority says.

The smaller mill will generate 420 hp and 420 lb-ft of torque, according to the report, compared with 395 hp and 400 lb-ft for the 5.0-liter V-8. The new powerplant also is expected to best the Coyote’s U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s fuel efficiency rating of 19 mpg, according to the report.

In recent years, F-150 buyers have increasingly opted for a range of available V-6 powerplants over the Coyote V-8. A twin-turbocharged Ecoboost 3.5-liter mill has been particularly popular, thanks to its high-output of 375 hp and 470 lb-ft of torque, FA notes.

The all-new 14th-generation F-150 is expected to bow late next year as a 2021 model. The 4.8-liter engine likely will be used in future Mustang pony cars and other models in addition to the redesigned pickup.
