Nissan Motor Co. and its Mitsubishi Motors Corp. affiliate confirm that their Dutch joint venture paid Carlos Ghosn, the former chairman of both companies, $9 million without telling them, The Nikkei reports.
The two carmakers say the JV gave Ghosn the compensation payment without discussing the transaction with the venture’s other two board members: Nissan CEO Hiroto Saikawa and Mitsubishi CEO Osamu Masuko.
Reuters cited a source earlier this week who described the allegedly improper payment and said Nissan might sue Ghosn for damages. Nissan confirmed earlier today it will consider ways to recover the payment. MMC says it will consider how to hold Ghosn responsible, The Nikkei reports.
