Nissan Motor Co. is evaluating the future of its Z-badged sports cars and top-end GT-R that could yield electric variants for the performance models.

The carmaker is “working hard on different options” for the vehicles, Chief Planning Officer Philippe Klein tells the Top Gear television program, adding that “we’re defending the sports car.”

If approved, next-generation versions of the aging models must meet future emission regulations but will maintain their fun-to-drive characteristics, he says.

The current GT-R (pictured) and 370Z were both launched a decade ago. Company officials have been talking about an electrified GT-R for several years. But the Z’s future is less certain.

In late 2017, Klein described the business case for the rear-wheel-drive sports car as “difficult.” He warned at the time that Nissan might discontinue Z-cars to better focus on the GT-R. Other reports have suggested that the Z’s survival will mean transitioning the marque to a crossover vehicle.
