In celebration of its 70th anniversary, Porsche AG is launching a limited-edition 935 track car.
As with the 1970s-era 935, the anniversary model is based on a heavily reworked 911 sports car. The single-seat 935 features a modified front-end that is wider, lower and longer than the stock 911, and ditches the car’s round headlights for rectangular units.
Tributes to the original 935, include long tail, large rear wing and capped wheel rims. Design cues also are borrowed from several other historic Porsche race cars, including the 1968 908 racer (titanium tailpipes), 919 Hybrid LMP1 car (rear lights) and current 911 RSR (side mirrors).
Power comes from the current 911 GT2 RS road car’s twin-turbo, 3.8-liter, 6-cylinder engine that’s tuned to make 690 hp in the 935. The engine is mated with a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission and a limited-slip differential.
Unlike the earlier model, which was designed for Group 5 regulations and won more than 100 sports car races, the new 935 isn’t homologated for competition. This allowed greater design freedom, Porsche notes.
Porsche plans to build 77 of the new 935 cars, with deliveries expected to start next summer. Pricing will start at €702,000 ($816,000).
