Daimler AG’s redesigned Mercedes-Benz GLA compact crossover is taller to enable an SUV-like elevated seating position.

Daimler AG’s redesigned Mercedes-Benz GLA compact crossover is about four inches taller and has a more upright front-end than its predecessor, which the carmaker says yields a “characteristic SUV” seating position.

The second-generation GLA moves to Mercedes’ MFA II platform, which carries the new A- and B-Class small cars, CLA coupe and GLB crossover.

The new architecture also has a longer wheelbase. This is offset by shorter front and rear overhangs, which makes the 2020 GLA slightly shorter than the outgoing model.

The interior features more front seat headroom and additional rear seat legroom. Other enhancements include Mercedes dual-screen MBUX infotainment and an ambient lighting system.

Among the standard safety features are active brake assist and sensors designed to detect approaching pedestrians and bicyclists. Mercedes says the vehicle also will feature an unspecified augmented reality technology.

The carmaker will publicly unveil the new GLA next month.
