BMW AG is finalizing a deal to supply conventional piston engines to Jaguar Land Rover Ltd., sources tell Autocar.

The British enthusiast magazine describes the deal as an extension of the alliance announced by the two companies in June to share electrified drivetrains based on BMW’s fifth-generation eDrive system, which will bow next year in the iX3 electric crossover vehicle. A joint team based in Munich will further develop the technology for next-generation models.
Under the new plan, BMW will provide JLR with 4- and 6-cylinder gasoline and diesel engines, some of which are equipped with electric hybrid functions, according to the report.
The scheme is designed to help JLR reduce its development spending on piston engines and devote more resources to electrification, Autocar says. BMW will benefit by bolstering demand for its traditional powerplants even as it moves to electrify 25 models by 2023.
