General Motors Co.’s GMC unit has dropped plans for a body-on-frame, midsize SUV, sources tell Muscle Cars and Trucks.

The program is a casualty of GM’s ongoing restructuring efforts that began last November, according to the report. Instead of developing an all-new midsize truck platform that would have carried the SUV, MCT says, GM is updating its existing 31XX architecture for the GMC Canyon (pictured) and Chevrolet Colorado pickups.

The truck-based SUV was to have been a stand-alone GMC model without a Chevy twin. It would have been GM’s first entry into the growing niche to compete against the Jeep Wrangler and upcoming Ford Bronco.
