Ford Motor Co. will replace its current Mondeo midsize car and S-Max and Galaxy MPVs in Europe with an all-new midsize crossover, Autocar reports.

The unnamed model could arrive by early 2021, according to the report. Autocar says the vehicle also may be marketed in the U.S., where it would compete against the Subaru Outback.

The new model is expected to be built on Ford’s modular C2 platform. That architecture underpins the new Focus midsize car and will carry the next-generation Fiesta car and Edge crossover. Modified versions of the chassis also will be used for future Transit and Tourneo commercial vans.

European versions of the new crossover will offer a range of diesel and gasoline engines, Autocar says. A 48-volt mild-hybrid system also is said to be in the works.

Last year, combined sales of the Mondeo, S-Max and Galaxy (pictured) were fewer than 90,000 units in Europe. Production of the S-Max and Galaxy MPVs could end next year, Autocar speculates.

Ford already has said it is discontinuing several other MPVs in Europe. The C-Max and Grand C-Max are being dropped this year, while the smaller B-Max model will be replaced by the all-new Puma crossover.
