Some members of BMW AG’s supervisory board are questioning whether CEO Harald Krueger’s contract should be renewed, sources tell Bloomberg News.
Krueger, now 53, took over as CEO in 2015. His current contract expires a year from now, but the board is expected to announce this summer whether it will ask him to continue.
BMW has lost its market momentum, and like other carmakers, profits are shrinking as market demand cools and trade issues heat up. The company also has struggled to expand its move into electrification after introducing the i3 electric city car six years ago.
But sources tell Bloomberg that Krueger also is dealing with a board that is deeply divided on strategy and wary about partnering with mobility services and developers of autonomous vehicle systems.
