Volkswagen AG plans to launch a Jetta sub-brand in China later this year, according to the country’s Sina social network.
The initial three-vehicle lineup will include the current Jetta compact car (pictured) and a pair of re-badged SEAT crossover vehicles (including the Ateca) priced between 50,000 and 100,000 yuan ($7,400-$14,800), according to the website. The vehicles would be produced by VW’s long-time joint venture with FAW Group, which markets a variety of Audi and Volkswagen models in China.
VW declined to comment on the report.
The carmaker already sells SEAT vehicles in China. But Sina notes that the Jetta name has a stronger brand image there. Skoda—VW’s other entry-level brand in Europe—sells car in China through VW’s joint venture with SAIC Motor Corp.
