Subaru of America is adding five states to its regional recall of 17,000 vehicles equipped with airbag inflators that could explode when triggered.

The original callback aims to replace passenger-side inflators made by Takata Corp. and installed in five models located in Florida, Hawaii, Puerto Rico and several tropical territories. The targeted cars include 2003-2005 Legacy sedans, Outback wagons and Baja SUVs; 2004-2005 Impreza sport sedans; and 2005 Saab 9-2X sport wagons.

The expanded recall will fix another 11,000 of those models located in southern Georgia and Gulf Coast areas of Alabama, Louisiana, Mississippi and Texas.

Subaru, which has not decided when to begin the wider recall, says it is not aware of any problems with the airbags in the affected cars.
