Subaru jumped six positions to top this year’s Consumer Reports brand rankings for the first time ever, displacing Hyundai Motor Co.’s Genesis luxury marque.

The CR ratings (left) reflect a combination of CR’s road tests, owner feedback about reliability and satisfaction, safety features and crash-test results. Only brands with two or more CR rated models are eligible.

The magazine notes that such sporty brands as BMW and Porsche scored better in road tests, But Subaru prevailed with superior reliability and owner satisifaction scores.

Porsche gained two spots this year to place third, ahead of Audi, which dropped two positions. Rounding out the top 10 are Lexus (-1 position), Mazda (+7), BMW (-4), Lincoln (+9), Toyota (+1) and Hyundai (+2).

Mini jumped 10 positions to 15th, the biggest gainer of all. Tesla and Chrysler each plunged 11 positions to 19th and 22nd, respectively. CR says Tesla’s results were hurt by below-average reliability for the company’s new Model 3 electric sedan. Chrysler’s rating fell on complaints about electronic glitches.

Fiat ranked last among the 33 brands on this year’s list. CR tested four Fiat models but recommends none of them. That compares with Subaru, where seven of eight models tested won the magazine’s recommendation.
