Tesla Motors Inc. Model S electric sedan has been named 2013 Car of the Year by Motor Trend. It's the first time the magazine has given the 64-year-old award to an electric vehicle.
The $57,400-$77,400 Model S went on sale earlier this year after several delays. Tesla expects to sell fewer than 5,000 of the cars this year but plans to build at least 20,000 of them in 2013.
Tesla developed the Model S with a single powertrain but three battery sizes (40-, 60- or 85-kWh) that provide owners with driving ranges of 120, 230 or 300 miles, respectively.
The company plans to use the Model S platform and many of its major components in the Model X crossover EV expected to debut next year.
