Toyota Motor Corp. and its Aisin AW Co. supplier affiliate are investing a combined $791 million in Texas as the carmaker expands production at its San Antonio truck plant.

Aisin is investing $400 million to build a manufacturing plant in Cibolo, Tex., outside San Antonio. Scheduled to come online in 2021, the factory will employ 900 people and supply automatic transmission for Toyota trucks built in San Antonio.

Toyota also plans to spend $391 million to make unspecified upgrades to the San Antonio assembly plant (pictured), which produces the midsize Tacoma and fullsize Tundra pickup trucks.

Those models currently ride on separate platforms but both are expected to eventually move to Toyota’s new F1 chassis. Other models could be added at the plant later.

With the new investment, Toyota says it will have spent more than $3 billion on the San Antonio complex since it opened in 2003. The 2.2 million-sq-ft facility employs 3,200 people.
