Toyota Motor Corp. says it is spending 1 billion reais ($316 million) to equip its factory in Sorocaba, Brazil, to assemble the Yaris subcompact, five-door hatchback for the local market.
Combined output of the retooled plant will remain at about 100,000 units per year, according to The Nikkei. The factory, which opened five years ago, will reduce output of the entry-level Toyota Etios small car to make room for the midrange Yaris.
Most of Toyota’s sales in Brazil are generated by the Etios and larger Corolla small sedan. Toyota builds the Corolla at its Brazilian factory in Indaiatuba.
