Criminal charges against a top aide at the United Auto Workers union implicate UAW President Gary Jones, The Detroit News reports.

Earlier today, federal prosecutors charged Edward Robinson, a UAW official in St. Louis, with conspiring with UAW executives to embezzle $1.5 million in union dues between 2010 and 2017.

Robinson is president of a UAW community activist group in Missouri. The federal lawsuit says he conspired with “UAW Official A” and “UAW Official B,” who sources tell the News are Jones (pictured) and former UAW President Dennis Williams. The homes of both men were raided by federal agents in August.

Prosecutors claim the group pocketed roughly $700,000 and spent about the same amount on personal luxuries ranging from posh villas to expensive meals and liquor.

Prosecutors say Jones advised Robinson how to issue and cash checks used to embezzle the funds. The indictment also describes attempts to obstruct the federal investigation and the promise of a payoff to shield Jones from prosecution.
